How do I file a claim with Safeco?
To file a claim with Safeco, call 1-800-332-3226. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Safeco Insurance Claims Center says that it “will help you through the claims process with friendly, step-by-step guidance.” Safeco adjusters may be friendly.
But if you have a personal injury case with Safeco, their goal is to pay you as little as possible.
After an accident in Florida, Should I give Safeco Insurance Company a recorded statement?
The answer depends if you are insured with Safeco, or whether a Safeco insured caused your injury.
A Safeco insured may be required to give a recorded statement. This requirement is based on a duty to cooperate that is written in the insurance policy.
However, the Safeco insured should ask the adjuster if the statement can be taken without a recording. The adjuster may agree to take an unrecorded statement.
The risk of a recorded statement is that it can later be used against you. You may forget to tell the adjuster about certain facts that can help your case.
This could result in you getting less money for your injury claim.
Safeco insured causes your injury
If a Safeco insured caused your injury, you do NOT have to give a recorded statement. DO NOT GIVE ONE.
The Safeco bodily injury claims adjuster can assess your case just fine without a recorded statement. The victim should report his accident claim to Safeco.
Unless the injured person is experienced in claims handling, keep any conversation as brief as possible. One “wrong” sentence can result in a big decrease in case value.
Track a Florida injury Claim with Safeco
Safeco allows you to track the status of your claim anytime using an online account. It only takes a few minutes to sign up.
Safeco insureds can also view their policy documents. Sometimes an uninsured motor vehicle will cause your accident and injury. The injured person may have Safeco insurance.
If so, he or she can look online to see if he or she has Safeco uninsured motorist (UM) bodily injury liability coverage. The injured person should still request that Safeco send him or her a formal insurance disclosure per Florida Statutes.
The victim should see if an uninsured motorist rejection form was signed.
In Florida, UM coverage may pay for the victim’s damages. Damages include past medical bills, future medical expenses, lost wages, pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, mental anguish and more.
Of the top 15 Florida private passenger auto liability insurers, Safeco has a larger market share than:
Safeco Auto Accident Settlements and Verdicts
Actual Case (not mine): A man was in a motor vehicle accident with a third party. He was insured by Safeco for UM benefits.
The injured victim, with Safeco’s consent and waiver of subrogation rights, settled his bodily injury claim against the third party for his insurance policy limits of $25,000.
He then sued Safeco seeking UM benefits under his policy with Safeco. The next day, he filed a “Civil Remedy Notice of Insurer Violations” form, claiming Safeco had tendered an unsatisfactory settlement offer on the UM policy, i.e., an offer less than the UM policy’s limits “even though the claim value exceeds” the limits of the tortfeasor’s policy limits combined with the UM limits.
Safeco did not serve an answer to the UM complaint until July 2, 2012.
According to the federal court order entered in this case, Safeco had defaulted and, in its June 2012 motion to set aside the default, “offered to settle the … claim — and any future bad faith claim — for policy limits,” and mailed a check for $100,000 to Respondent.
The victim apparently rejected Safeco’s offer. I do not know the outcome of this case. Both the injured man’s lawyers and Safeco’s attorneys were located in Pensacola, Florida.
I assume that this accident happened in that part of Florida. The case is Safeco Insurance Co. of Illinois v. Rader, 132 So. 3d 941 (Fla. 1st DCA 2014).
Are a lot of consumer complaints made against Safeco in Florida?
No. The 2014 FLOIR Annual report does not show that any consumer complaints were filed against Safeco Insurance Company Of Illinois. This is a good sign.
Let me explain why. Safeco Insurance Company of Illinois’ written premiums in Florida were $239 Million. They had no consumer complaints.
On the other hand, Windhaven Insurance Company’s Florida direct written premiums were about $173 Million. This means that Safeco does about 1.5 times as much business as Windhaven in Florida.
Windhaven had 66 complaints, yet Safeco had none. If they were on par with consumer complaints, Safeco would have had about 100 complaints. This is because Safeco has 1.5 times Windhaven’s market share.
So judging insurance companies solely based on Florida consumer complaints, Safeco is a much better insurer than Windhaven and many others.
Which Florida defense attorneys does Safeco use for Florida auto accident cases?
- Richard Young, Megan M. Hall, and Adam A. Duke of Young, Bill, Roumbos & Boles, P.A., Pensacola, Florida (2014)
Where is Safeco Insurance Company of America’s main office?
Safeco and/or its affiliates have their main office in Boston, Massachusetts. I believe that any catastrophic claims with large policy limits will be reviewed there.
Should you look at Safeco’s website to see if its insured has coverage?
A Safeco insured may cause your injury. You may look at Safeco’s website to see if they are covered.
Safeco’s website provides a basic description of coverage. It does not create a contract.
All statements on Safeco’s website are subject to the provisions, exclusions, conditions and limitations of the insurance policy. You should look at the actual policy forms for complete details regarding the coverage.
The policy language takes precedence over any materials on Safeco’s website. If a Safeco insured’s carelessness caused your injury in Florida, you can request a disclosure of insurance information in writing.
