What is Collision Coverage in an Car Insurance Policy?

Collision coverage covers damages to your vehicle if it is moving.  Collision coverage is optional in Florida.

Collision coverage must be purchased for your vehicle before an accident.

Example – Collision Coverage Pays for Damage to Your Car

You are stopped at a red traffic light. A car crashes into the back of your car.

The driver of the car that hit you was negligent.  If your car’s auto insurance policy has collision coverage, it will pay for the damage to your car.

You also have the option of making a claim against the other driver or any liable parties.  The liable party’s property damage (“PD”) insurance would pay for the damage to your car.

Collision Coverage Pays Even If You’re At Fault

Collision coverage pay for the damage to your vehicle regardless of fault.

Example

Take the same example from above except assume that you crashed into the back of someone’s car.  Even though you’re at fault, your collision coverage will pay to get your car fixed.

Collision Insurance Doesn’t Pay For a Rental Car

Your collision coverage will not pay for your rental car.  However, your auto insurance policy may have rental car coverage.  It is optional.

If a driver’s negligence caused damage to your car, the driver’s property damage (PD) insurance should pay for your rental car.

Should You Make a Claim Through Your Collision Coverage or the Other Driver’s PD Insurance?

You may want to consider making a claim against both.  If you do so, let both auto insurers know that you’re making a claim with both.  Then you’ll see who’ll resolve the claim quicker for fair value.

Collision Insurance Is Different From Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive covers damage to your vehicle caused when your vehicle is not moving. Examples are storm damage, fire, vandalism, flood, etc.
