After the surgery is complete, the patient is able to heal while wearing a splint which may be removed. This surgery can take place is less than 1 hour. Prior to percutaneous surgery, open procedures were necessary and patients needed to wear a cast for to two or three months following the operation. Some doctors say the healing rates for the percutaneous scaphoid fracture can be one hundred percent. Many fractures are treated using percutaneous fixation techniques, such as those of the metacarpals and the phalanges. When there are severe breaks in the finger joints, the person’s finger may be placed in an external fixator apparatus, and the doctor may use fluoroscopy to guide placement of the wires. A percutaneous surgery is known as a vascular procedure procedure because it involves the needle catheter having access to blood vessels, to be followed by wire which comes through the lumen of a needle. On top of the wire other catheters are placed into the blood vessel. The use of this technique is called the Seldinger technique.
