  • Meniscus

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of fibrocartilage which resides at the peripheral aspect of the joint. Most of the meniscus does not have blood supply, and because of that, when the meniscus suffers injury, it is unable to heal itself like the rest of the human body.  When humans get older, the meniscus begins to weaken, many times developing degenerative tears.  When the meniscus is injured, the torn part starts to move in a abnormal manner inside the joint.

Because the space between the bones of the joint is very small, as the abnormally mobile piece of meniscal tissue (meniscal fragment) moves, it may become caught between the bones of the joint (femur and tibia). When this happens, the knee becomes painful, swollen, and difficult to move.

The meniscus has many roles, one of which is acting as an stabilizer.  The meniscii (plural)  deals with the stabilizing role of ligaments and  stabilize and are very efficient when the ligaments around it are in ability – As secondary stabilizers, the intact meniscii interact with the stabilizing function of the ligaments and are most effective when the surrounding ligaments are altogether.

The meniscus is also a “seperator” in the middle of the tibia and the femur.  A meniscii does not allow rubbing between the femur and the tibia.  The meniscii allows for diffusion of the regular joint fluid and the nutrients into the tissue that covers that end of the bone.  The tissue is called the articular cartilage.  It is important the cartilage is taken care of so that the creation of post-traumatic or degenerative arthritis.
